The “hands up” feature recently implemented in Microsoft Teams videoconferencing software has been a really great feature for remote learning, particularly larger groups of younger students.
Younger students sometimes get very excited and all want to talk at once to in response to a question or comment. It’s quite funny actually – I have seen it with Year 7’s in particular. The hands up feature can provide some order in these situations and allow each students to have their say one at a time.
The hands up feature is also a great way to quickly check how students are going on a task. e.g. hands up those who have completed the Chapter 4 questions on cyclones. The anticipation of a “hands up” request from their teacher also keeps students on their toes!
So to MS Teams and our virtual “Hands Up”, we teachers are thankful!
